The artwork tells about the impossibility of self-expression, even in private. The honest thoughts and emotions evoked by the witnessing of war and occupation are not only barred from the public sphere in Crimea but have become almost unbearable to articulate behind closed doors.
Having grown up in a society shaped by Soviet-era trauma, I see how the fear of repression and denunciation has become a habitual heritage for successive generations. Living under the pressure of censorship and propaganda leads to deep self-censorship—a state where one begins to monitor every word, even within the sanctuary of personal life.
In this artwork, unspoken thoughts and unshed tears transform into heavy stones embedded in the diary's pages. When the slippery pages are turned, these stones crash to the floor with a noise. This is a physical metaphor for silence and the heavy mental burden that finds no exit.
